Jumba la Mtwana, also known as Jumba Ruins, is a picturesque ruined village, located one kilometer from the mouth of the Mtwapa Creek and about four kilometers from the main Mombasa - Mailndi Road. Within these area four mosques, a tomb and four houses have survived in recognizable condition.
Located by the edge of Mombasa National Marine Park, it is a 14th Century ancient Swahili Stone Town in a fine woodland setting, with astonishing giant secular baobabs, different species of birds, monkey, butterfly and exotic insects.
The sight’s name, Jumba la Mtwana, means Large House of the Slaves in Swahili. The settlement was a Muslim stronghold, strategically positioned since there was no harbor and the presence of fresh water. Most probably ships had to anchor at the Mtwapa Creek.
